Love live music? Make hearing protection part of your plans
Whether you enjoy gigs, play in a band or spend your weekends at concerts, your hearing deserves a place on your checklist alongside your tickets.
This October, the World Health Organization renewed its call for action on safer listening. Its message is relevant to anyone who enjoys music: reducing harmful sound exposure can help protect your hearing for the years ahead.
Ringing ears after a gig?
In August 2026, RNID reported that 83% of the adults aged 20–29 in its survey had experienced ringing, buzzing or muffled hearing after loud music or an event. Just 7% said they had always worn earplugs at loud music events over the previous year.
These symptoms may settle, but they are a warning that your ears have been exposed to excessive sound. Repeated exposure can lead to permanent hearing loss or tinnitus.
Simple ways to listen more safely
You can reduce your exposure while still enjoying the music:
Wear suitable earplugs. Choose protection designed for loud music and make sure it fits correctly.
Move away from speakers. Avoid spending the evening directly beside a loudspeaker or amplifier.
Take quieter breaks. Step away from the loudest areas regularly.
Watch your headphone volume too. Keep it down, use sound-exposure alerts where available and limit long listening sessions. Well-fitting, noise-cancelling headphones can reduce the temptation to turn music up over background noise.
The risk depends on both how loud the sound is and how long you are exposed. Earplugs work best alongside these other precautions.
Will earplugs spoil the sound?
Music earplugs use filters designed to reduce sound levels more evenly than ordinary foam plugs, helping preserve the balance and clarity of the music.
There are reusable, instant-fit options and custom-made plugs shaped to your ears. The right choice depends on your activities, the protection required, fit and comfort. Custom plugs are one option, but they are not essential for everyone.
